Mental Health Boost

Red light therapy is natural, non-invasive cellular therapy that is supported by over 6,000 studies for a range of ailments including mental health and cognitive acuity.

While the collective understanding of the complexities of mental function continues to evolve, red light therapy offers potential benefits for improving mental health through various mechanisms. Here are the key points:

  1. Mood Enhancement: Red light therapy has been shown to have positive effects on mood by increasing the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of well-being and happiness. This can help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and seasonal affective disorder (SAD).
  2. Stress Reduction: Red light therapy has a calming effect on the body and can help reduce stress and anxiety. It stimulates the production of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving and mood-boosting chemicals in the brain. By promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels, it contributes to improved mental well-being.
  3. Cognitive Function: Red light therapy may enhance cognitive function, including memory, attention, and concentration. It stimulates the growth of new neurons and improves cerebral blood flow, which can support cognitive performance and overall brain health.
  4. Sleep Improvement: Red light therapy can help regulate the sleep-wake cycle and improve sleep quality. Exposure to red light in the evening can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, helping to reset circadian rhythms and promote better sleep patterns.
  5. Neuroprotection: Red light therapy has neuroprotective effects and may help protect brain cells from damage. It can stimulate the production of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory molecules, reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain, which are linked to neurodegenerative disorders and mental health conditions.

By utilizing red light therapy, individuals may experience improvements in mood, stress reduction, enhanced cognitive function, better sleep, and neuroprotection. However, it is important to note that red light therapy should be used as a complementary approach alongside other mental health interventions and treatments as advised by healthcare professionals.

Red Light Therapy Study #1

This mental acuity study focused on evaluating key skills such as reaction time and memory retrieval, as well as emotional health. The latter is an important
measure as declines in emotional health often occur as a result of mental acuity loss.

Red and near-infrared light therapy was applied to the frontal cortex, the area of the brain responsible for planning appropriate responses to external and internal stimuli. Key improvements were seen in both reaction time (the length of time it takes to respond to a stimulus) and memory retrieval..

An increase in positive emotional states was also reported after the series of treatments (measured through a PANAS-X score).

The results show promise for those interested in using non-invasive convenient therapy to slow the decline which occurs with age or concussions and to support those who struggle with mental health.

Red Light Therapy Study #2

This impressive pilot study assessed the effects of a single 4-minute light therapy session on patients with mental health histories that included major depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Prior to the treatment, a baseline diagnostic interview gave the individuals a depression rating (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale HAM-A and HAM-D). Near-infrared was then targeted toward four points on the brain for four minutes in total, and patients' scores were reviewed after two and four weeks.

Results were most significant at the 2-week follow-up, with 6 out of 10 patients having a remission score on the HAM-D rating and 7 out of 10 having a remission score on the HAM-A.

With near-infrared light therapy offering accumulative benefits with consistent use, the study indicates that this therapy could be of significant support for those who suffer from mental health issues.
