Optimised Immunity

Red light therapy is a natural, non-invasive cellular treatment supported by over 6,000 studies. It targets a range of areas, including the function of the immune system.

Red light therapy has the potential to optimize immunity through various mechanisms. Here's a summary of how it works:

  1. Enhanced Cellular Function: Red light therapy stimulates the mitochondria in our cells, promoting better energy production and cellular function. This can lead to improved immune cell activity, including the function of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in fighting off infections and pathogens.
  2. Reduced Inflammation: Red light therapy has anti-inflammatory effects, helping to modulate the immune response. By reducing chronic inflammation, it can prevent excessive immune activation and support a balanced immune system. This is important as chronic inflammation can weaken the immune system and make it less effective in combating infections.
  3. Increased Circulation: Red light therapy improves blood circulation, which aids in the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells throughout the body. Efficient circulation ensures that immune cells can reach the target areas efficiently and carry out their immune functions effectively.
  4. Enhanced Antioxidant Defense: Red light therapy can boost the body's antioxidant defenses, helping to neutralize harmful free radicals. By reducing oxidative stress, it supports a healthy immune system. Oxidative stress can weaken the immune response, making the body more susceptible to infections and illnesses.
  5. Regulation of Cytokines: Red light therapy can modulate the production and activity of cytokines, which are signaling molecules involved in immune regulation. By promoting a balanced cytokine response, it helps maintain immune homeostasis and improves overall immune function.

By utilizing red light therapy, individuals may experience improvements in their immune response, leading to a stronger defense against infections, faster recovery, and overall better immune system function.

Red Light Therapy Study #1

This study on the immune system is relevant to the recent pandemic, as we start to understand the acute and chronic effects. Red and near-infrared light therapy has been proven in this area before, with sunlight being considered one of the most effective treatments in the 1918 Spanish influenza outbreak.

Red and infrared light in the ranges of 600-1000nm has been shown to reduce lung inflammation and fibrosis and therefore acute respiratory disorder. Acute respiratory disorder is most often characterised by oedema (swelling) in the airway, which has been and continues to be a cause of death in the current pandemic.

Red light therapy, administered 1 hour after the induction of inflammation, inhibited pulmonary oedema and downregulated several of the markers of inflammation.

While this study is looking at acute management, red and near-infrared technology's ability to create homeostasis within cells shows promise for those with immune-related ailments, particularly autoimmunity, for which there is no present treatment.

Red Light Therapy Study #2

One of the many studies on immunity showed fascinating results with the virus that recently caused the pandemic.

Thirty participants between the ages of 50-80 who were diagnosed with the virus via a PCR test were split into a control group and an LED (light emitting device) treatment group.

The treatment group was exposed to LED therapy via a jacket for 15 minutes per day over a week, in addition to participating in conventional therapy. The control group had the same conventional therapy and put the jacket on but the LEDs were never switched on.

There were significant improvements in the LED treatment group comparative to the control group. These include improvements in oxygen saturation, tidal volume (amount of air you breathe at rest). A reduction in respiratory frequency often elevated with infection and lower heart rate. There were also improvements in a number of blood markers, one of particular significance is the increase in lymphocytes which are needed to fight this virus.
